Finding Your Cooling Solution
This is actually a fairly common issue for two floor homes, but that doesn’t really make it always easy to find a solution to. The problem could be one of many. But the good news is that most issues are quite separate. Thing’s that go wrong with a downstairs are often much different than ones that only affect up top. We can use this knowledge to pinpoint a cause.
Causes for a Hot Bottom Floor
If the first level of your home is too hot then there are only a couple likely culprits, including:
- Dirty or blocked vents. This is your best case sort of issue. Over time vents can just get quite gunked up, and this is much more common on ground floors where traffic is much more common. Check that all vents are clean and clear, and be sure that no furniture is blocking vents.
- Uninsulated ductwork. This problem could technically be for either up or downstairs, but uninsulated ductwork often loses tons of conditioned air while it travels through your home. This can result in a very hot space wherever the ducts are most exposed.
- AC malfunctions. The problem could actually be as simple as a blocked duct, which is nothing to write home about, but will require a professional repair to fix.
Causes for a Hot Top Floor
Overheated second floors are much more common, and this is for one really big reason: poorly insulated attics! Your attic space is the most critical location for high quality and reliable insulation. Without it all of the upstairs conditioned air begins to escape upward and all of the heat your roof absorbs starts to seep in.
To remedy (temporarily) this issue many homeowners turn to closing downstairs vents in order to divert more cool air upward. Don’t do this! Altering open vents disrupts proper airflow and messes up the air pressure in your home, making your cooling system overwork in order to accommodate the change. This will not only make your energy bills shoot through the roof, but will also very likely result in an eventual breakdown. Insulating is a permanent and proper solution!
The Last Hope to Fix Uneven Cooling
If none of the above prove to be your issue it may simply be time to look into a new cooling system upgrade. Air conditioners aren’t built to last forever and uneven cooling is a very common symptom of an aged or worn out cooling system. Replacing can help you cut down costs, stay more comfortable, and will offer you the reliability you’re looking for.
